Q Why not just get a cleaner?

A Having a cleaner whose standards are lower than your own (pretty lax) ones doesn’t help – and it’s amazing how many people are in that boat. At the end of the day, you have to do some cleaning yourself. The best advice I’ve received on cleaners is to make sure they clean – and you tidy. I don’t have a cleaner now but I took the view when I did, that it wasn’t her job to unload the dishwasher. You want your cleaner to be prioritising the cupboards you haven’t seen inside for decades and getting stuck into the corners you’re always too busy to do. Paying your cleaner to pick up your kids’ toys probably isn’t the best use of her time and your money.
